Miami Celebrates Juneteenth - African American Heritage

Greater Miami celebrates Juneteenth – African America Heritage holiday of culture, freedom and resilience. Miami is primed and ready to bring celebration and honor to a holiday which only recently has received the world-wide recognition it deserves. The birthplace of Juneteenth celebrations was in Texas to recognized and highlight the historic event on June 19, 1865, when Union troops freed enslaved African Americans in Galveston Bay and across Texas. Enslaved laborers had continue to work the fields and plantations of their enslavers for some two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Celebrating their freedom and continuing cultural traditions, Juneteenth became a way to share the history and lives of those enslaved in Texas, and their freedom. The festivities have grown to be a part of all African American’s story and shared globally.
